Legal Online Casino in Canada: Province by Province

Online casino play is legal in every province, but only on approved sites. Ontario and Alberta let private companies in; every other province has one official site run by its lottery.

An online casino counts as legal in Canada when your own province says it does, and each province sets its own rules. In Ontario and Alberta, private companies can run casino sites as long as they follow the provincial system. Elsewhere, most provinces keep things simple with one official site looked after by the provincial lottery corporation. Two words come up a lot below: a regulator is the government body that sets the rules and checks that sites follow them, and a register is its official list of approved companies.

Legal Sites and Minimum Ages, Province by Province

You need to be 18 or 19 to play, and it depends on where you live.

The age details come from official sources for each region: Alberta, Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Québec, and Atlantic Canada.

Online Casinos in Alberta

The regulated online gambling market in Alberta opened on 13 July 2026. Players must be 18 or older.

On launch day the market had 22 registered sites. We now count 51 sites open to Albertans, spread across 32 companies. Of those, 49 offer casino games, and 20 include a sportsbook, the part of a site where you bet on sports.

Another eight brands are on Alberta's register but have yet to launch:

  • Betano
  • Bet United Casino
  • Fire Vegas
  • Mr Vegas
  • PointsBet
  • ToonieBet
  • Videoslots
  • 247bet

Any site you look at falls into one of three groups: registered and open, run by a registered company but not open yet, or not on the register at all. Only the first group may take your bets.

Ontario's Private Casino Market

Ontario let private companies into its market on 4 April 2022. Before then, OLG was the only regulated online gambling option in the province.

A private company has to register with the AGCO, which regulates gaming in Ontario. It also needs an operating agreement in place with iGaming Ontario. That agreement is a contract with the agency that runs Ontario's online gambling market. The iGaming Ontario directory counts 49 operators and 84 websites. Players must be at least 19 and physically located inside Ontario.

Provinces With a Single Official Site

British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan each rely on PlayNow.com as their legal online gambling site. Each province runs the site in its own way.

  • British Columbia: BCLC owns PlayNow.com, which is the only legal online gambling website allowed in the province. The site launched in 2004, and casino games joined the lineup in 2010.
  • Manitoba: The site is run by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, with the LGCA regulating it. The LGCA is Manitoba's Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority. The corporation describes PlayNow.com as the sole legal online gambling option in Manitoba.
  • Saskatchewan: three groups share the job. The province's gaming company oversees the site, the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority runs it day to day, and the province's liquor and gaming regulator checks that it follows the rules. It went live on 3 November 2022, making it the province's first legally regulated online gaming platform.

Over in Québec, Loto-Québec describes its website as the only legal casino website within the province. The online games welcome Québec residents aged 18 and up.

Gambling in Atlantic Canada

Atlantic Lottery offers casino games on alc.ca to players in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Players must be at least 19 and live in one of those four provinces. You also have to be physically in Atlantic Canada while you play.

Your Location While You Play

Many provincial sites care about where you are, not just where you live. Ontario wants you physically inside Ontario, and alc.ca wants you in Atlantic Canada. To play on PlayNow Manitoba, you must live in Manitoba and be physically located there.

Questions People Often Ask

Is online gambling legal all across Canada?

Every province allows it, but only on the sites that province approves. A site that is fine in one province may be off limits in the next one over.

If I am in Alberta, can I still use my Ontario account?

No. Ontario's regulated sites are only open to players located in Ontario. While you are in Alberta, you need to play on a site that is on Alberta's own register.

What about Yukon, the Northwest Territories, or Nunavut?

The sources we checked do not show any legal online casino in the territories. The Western Canada Lottery Corporation runs lotteries in Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and it sells only lottery tickets online, through SubscriptionSpot.ca or the Lotto Spot! app.
