Is Online Gambling Legal in Alberta?

In Alberta, legal online gambling runs on two types of site. The first, Play Alberta, is run by AGLC on behalf of the province. The second type is private sites: AGLC has registered the companies behind them, and each one opened to Albertans through an agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation. Private sites have been allowed since 13 July 2026.

Names we looked for and did not find on the register

These names come from what people search for. We found no registrant running them on AGLC's register. A brand's operator may be registered under a different company name, so check the register yourself before you sign up. A name that registers at a later point ends up in the register table here.

The Ontario column shows iGaming Ontario's legal-site list as of 1 September 2026. People in Alberta still cannot bet there, even if a site is on Ontario's list.

How this check works

Registration information comes from AGLC's register of gaming registrants. Open status comes from a second source, the Alberta iGaming Corporation's list of registered iGaming sites. Only a site that appears on that list is treated as open. Names and web addresses get typed many different ways, so our comparison treats "bet365", "bet365.ca" and "bet 365" as a single site.

That pattern does not cover Play Alberta. Because AGLC runs it for the province, it sits outside the private registered operators and is not counted among the private sites. Failing to find a name there does not settle the question. The company may be on the register under a different name, so check there yourself before you sign up.

List changes

On 13 July 2026, the Government of Alberta admitted private sites to the market, and more have kept opening since. We review both official lists every week and update the table each time they change. The copy we hold right now names 51 private sites open to Albertans.

Checking a brand on your own

Whether a brand is legal in Alberta depends on two lists. AGLC's register of licensed iGaming operators is the first, and it names the company behind each brand. The Alberta iGaming Corporation's open-site list is the second one. From it you learn whether an operator is registered only, or is truly taking players yet.

Look for the brand name in the register. If the name is missing, nothing else matters: the site runs outside Alberta's rules. If you find it, write down the company name, then confirm the site's own terms name that company too. If a brand's terms name another company, the operator listed on the register is not that brand.

The Alberta iGaming Corporation's list is the next thing to check. A brand may be registered yet still closed, so even with a licence in place, you cannot play there today. What the two lists do is set out in our guide to the Alberta iGaming Corporation.

What the register leaves out

The register confirms that a brand may lawfully take your money. How fast the site pays, how large the game library is, and how well the app is built are things it does not tell you. Such things are business choices, and the regulator has nothing to say about them.

So a brand may be fully legal yet still be a bad choice for you. Suppose a registered site pays out in 72 hours and requires a $20 minimum deposit. It is legal and safe, yet a competitor nearby is quicker and cheaper to open.

Treat the register as a first check, not the final word. Knowing a brand is legal is step one. Whether you want to use it is decided by the figures on its own help pages.

Playing at an unregistered site: what happens

A site missing from AGLC's register is operating outside Alberta's rules. First, your funds sit with the company's money rather than apart. Second, a refused withdrawal gives you no provincial place to complain. Third, the self-exclusion tools at registered sites do not apply.

Arrest is not the practical risk here. For the player, using an unregistered site is no criminal offence. What you risk is unprotected deposited money and a dispute with no regulator behind it.

Heavy advertising in Alberta does not make a brand registered. Several well-known brands stay closed to Alberta players, holding their licences in other provinces or other countries. Only sites on the register appear in our Alberta comparison.

Limits, deposits and cash-outs at legal Alberta sites

Deposit limits and self-exclusion must be offered by every site on AGLC's register, and honoured once you set them. That is what separates a legal site from an unregistered one in practice: at a legal site, the tools exist and they work.

The figures for money in and out differ from brand to brand. Minimum deposits fall between $1 and $20. Cash-outs take anywhere from under 30 minutes up to 72 hours. The leading method at most brands is Interac e-Transfer, listed by most for deposits and for withdrawals.

If your goal is to stop playing on all of Alberta's legal sites at once, asking AGLC to block you is an option. Every registered operator is covered, not just the one where you made the request. How to do it is explained in our self-exclusion guide.

Online gambling in Alberta: who regulates it

The regulator is AGLC, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission. Licensed iGaming operators are listed on its register, and it sets the rules they follow. A separate body, the Alberta iGaming Corporation, holds the operating agreements and manages the commercial side of the market.

When you check a brand, each one matters. You can see from AGLC's register that a licence is in place. The Alberta iGaming Corporation's site list shows you that the operator has opened. A brand may show up on the first without being on the second.

AGLC runs Play Alberta, the site owned by the province itself. It alone also sells lottery tickets, and the province, not a company, receives its profits.

The register in a single sentence

Playing there from inside Alberta is legal if the brand sits on AGLC's register and the Alberta iGaming Corporation's open-site list. If it appears on neither, it is not.

What people ask about the register

Is online gambling legal in Alberta?

Yes. On 13 July 2026, Alberta's regulated online market opened. Playing on a registered site requires you to be at least 18 and physically inside Alberta.

How do I find out if a casino is legal in Alberta?

Look up the brand name in AGLC's register of licensed iGaming operators. A site missing from it is running outside Alberta's rules. Then look at the Alberta iGaming Corporation's open-site list to see if the operator has started taking players.

What if I play at a casino that is not registered?

The player commits no criminal offence by playing at an unregistered site. The risk: your funds are not kept separate, a refused withdrawal leaves you no provincial way to complain, and self-exclusion tools do not apply to it.

Is 888 a legal option in Alberta?

Yes. AGLC's register lists 888, and the Alberta iGaming Corporation's open-sites list shows it too. In Alberta, it is the casino brand named most often for running a poker room.

Who is the regulator for online gambling in Alberta?

AGLC keeps the register and sets the rules. AGLC is the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission. A separate body, the Alberta iGaming Corporation, manages the market commercially and holds the operating agreements.

At a legal Alberta casino, can I set a deposit limit?

Yes. Every site in AGLC's register must offer deposit limits and self-exclusion, and once set, must honour them. Another option: you may request that AGLC block you from all legal Alberta sites at once.

How old must you be to gamble online in Alberta?

18. The age in Alberta is 18, below Ontario's 19. You also have to be physically inside Alberta while you play; being a resident there is not enough.

Is online gambling legal in Alberta, in short?

When a brand appears on AGLC's register and also on the Alberta iGaming Corporation's open-site list, playing there from inside Alberta is legal. If it appears on neither, then it is not.
